Mobile App Development — the questions we get asked

Cross-platform, usually. React Native gets you both stores from one codebase, which roughly halves the build and, more importantly, halves the cost of every future change. Native earns its keep when the app leans hard on device capabilities — heavy camera or sensor work, background location, demanding graphics — or when the interface must feel indistinguishable from the platform. We make that call on what your app actually does, not on principle.

Often a mobile website would do, and we will say so. Apps earn their place when you need push notifications, offline use, device hardware, or genuinely frequent repeat visits — the home-screen icon is only worth the maintenance if people tap it regularly. If your users visit twice a year to look something up, an app is a costly way to be uninstalled. A progressive web app sits between the two and is sometimes the right answer.

Yes, and for field teams it is usually essential. We build offline-first: the app holds a local copy of the data it needs, records changes made without signal, and syncs when the connection returns. The interesting design work is conflict resolution — deciding what wins when two people edited the same record offline. That is a business rule, not a technical default, so we agree it with you rather than picking last-write-wins and hoping.

We do — store listings, screenshots, privacy declarations, review responses, and the rejections that occasionally come back. We publish under your developer accounts, not ours, so you own the listings and the users outright. Plan for roughly a week of review buffer on a first submission; Apple in particular is stricter with new publishers, and building that into the launch date avoids an awkward conversation later.

The app talks to an API that sits over your existing systems, so it reads and writes the same data your web tools and back office already use. Nobody re-keys anything, and there is no second version of the truth living on phones. Where the underlying systems have no usable API, we build that layer as part of the project — it is often the most valuable piece, because everything else you build later can use it too.

More than people expect, and it is not optional. Apple and Google each ship a major OS release every year, deprecate APIs, and periodically change store requirements; an app left untouched for eighteen months starts breaking on new devices and can be pulled from sale. We handle SDK updates, OS compatibility, crash monitoring, and store-policy changes on a monthly hours block, alongside whatever new features you want.

It depends far more on the backend than the screens. An app over an existing, well-built API is a fraction of the cost of one where the data still lives in spreadsheets and the integrations do not exist yet.
